Lifestyles History
The lifestyle was vibrant, but in its infancy in the early 1970s. Distances were greater then, events and places were more localized. To make a long-distance call one placed the call with the operator, then wait for a call-back. Telephone booths were at every gas station and cell phones were a science fiction fantasy. Bob & Geri McGinley, part of the Southern California club scene with their Club WideWorld, saw a need to bring information on lifestyles, sexuality and relationships to couples and singles involved or wanting to be involved 9in a lifestyle relationship. Their vision became a reality in the spring of 1973 with their first convention taking place on a ranch adjacent to the campus of the University of California, Riverside

“From this humble beginning the annual Lifestyles Convention was born.”

From this humble beginning the annual Lifestyles Convention was born. Venues moved from the Riverside ranch of 1973 to Anaheim, then Los Angeles and San Francisco where it received national attention. With the aid of Dr. Edgar Butler, Chair of the Sociology Dept. of the University of California at Riverside, the seminars grew in number and took on a professional and academic character.

“Lifestyles stood up to the ABC where others would not.”

Lifestyles first venture into Las Vegas was at the Hacienda, the current site of Luxor. The Hacienda hosted Lifestyles for several years. The convention moved to St. Louis for one year and to San Diego for several years where it was forced to fight a six year legal battle with the California Alcohol Beverage Control Board before returning to Las Vegas to be sited at the Tropicana, Riviera, and Aladdin, now Planet Hollywood. Lifestyles stood up to the ABC where others would not, causing the 9th Circuit to declare almost a third of the ABC law to be unconstitutional.

Final conventions went to Reno for 3 years at the Reno Hilton – huge events! The 34 consecutive years of the Lifestyles Convention culminated in major events for three years at the famous Stardust, with the last venue in Las Vegas in 2007 at the Tuscany. Following a hiatus of six years the Lifestyles Convention, loved by many, has returned as Lifestyles 2014, July 23-27 at the world class Hyatt Regency Indian Wells Resort & Spa in Indian Wells, California. The resort is close to the Palm Springs International Airport which is served by most major airlines.
